En l\u2019espace de deux si\u00e8cles environ, le mot \u00ab\u00a0<em>chauffeur\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> a perdu son sens, mais pas forc\u00e9ment son usage. Aujourd\u2019hui, il coexiste avec le terme <em>\u00ab\u00a0conducteur\u00a0\u00bb,<\/em> au point qu\u2019il arrive de faire la confusion dans le langage courant. Ils ne sont pourtant pas synonymes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retra\u00e7ons l\u2019histoire derri\u00e8re cette \u00e9volution, depuis l\u2019origine du mot \u00ab\u00a0<em>chauffeur<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa distinction d\u2019avec \u00ab\u00a0<em>conducteur<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"507\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png 507w, https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-211x300.png 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Origine de \u00ab\u00a0chauffeur\u00a0\u00bb : quelle est la diff\u00e9rence entre chauffeur et conducteur ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Chauffeur\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> trouve son origine au XIXe si\u00e8cle, l\u2019\u00e9poque des locomotives et des premi\u00e8res voitures \u00e0 vapeur (avant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/actu.caminteresse.fr\/societe\/depuis-quand-passe-t-on-son-permis-de-conduire-11198969\/\">l\u2019invention du permis de conduire<\/a>). Elles fonctionnaient gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une chaudi\u00e8re. Les op\u00e9rateurs devaient allumer un feu pour chauffer un r\u00e9servoir d\u2019eau, afin de produire assez de vapeur pour lancer l\u2019engin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le d\u00e9marrage prenait plusieurs dizaines de minutes, le temps pour la temp\u00e9rature du r\u00e9servoir de grimper. La personne charg\u00e9e d\u2019alimenter le foyer et de conduire \u00e9tait d\u00e9sign\u00e9e comme <em>\u00ab\u00a0chauffeur\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Conducteur\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> est apparu plus tard. Ce mot fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l\u2019acte de conduire l\u2019engin d\u2019un point \u00e0 un autre. Il implique davantage la responsabilit\u00e9 dans l\u2019acte. Le conducteur garantit la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des passagers, le respect de l\u2019itin\u00e9raire et la ponctualit\u00e9 du trajet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chauffeur ou conducteur de bus : aujourd\u2019hui, quelle expression utiliser ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De nos jours, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, les transports ont \u00e9volu\u00e9. Les deux termes sont employ\u00e9s, mais pas forc\u00e9ment de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re. Ainsi, il est usuel de dire \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/actu.caminteresse.fr\/societe\/quel-est-le-salaire-dun-chauffeur-de-taxi-11201640\/\">chauffeur de taxi<\/a>\u00ab\u00a0, m\u00eame si le principe du taxi existait d\u00e9j\u00e0 avant l\u2019invention des voitures \u00e0 vapeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Les conducteurs sont des professionnels pilotant des v\u00e9hicules de transport en commun (<a href=\"https:\/\/actu.caminteresse.fr\/histoire\/le-tout-premier-transport-en-commun-a-ete-cree-par-un-philosophe-11202421\/\">que Blaise Pascal avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 imagin\u00e9s<\/a>) ou des v\u00e9hicules de transport de voyageurs sur des lignes r\u00e9guli\u00e8res. Dans ce sens, un \u00ab\u00a0conducteur\u00a0\u00bb de bus semble logique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pourtant, d\u00e9sormais, l\u2019on dit bien <em>\u00ab\u00a0conducteur de train\u00a0\u00bb,<\/em> alors que jadis, ils \u00e9taient <em>\u00ab\u00a0chauffeurs\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> de locomotive \u00e0 vapeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vous l\u2019avez remarqu\u00e9, personne ne dit <em>\u00ab\u00a0conducteur d\u2019avion\u00a0\u00bb,<\/em> mais&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/actu.caminteresse.fr\/societe\/comment-devenir-pilote-de-ligne-11187627\/\">pilote de ligne<\/a>, une sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 \u00e0 part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Que faut-il dire au f\u00e9minin : chauffeure ou chauffeuse ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si vous connaissez une femme d\u00e9tentrice du permis de conduire un bus, il faut l\u2019appeler <em>\u00ab\u00a0conductrice\u00a0\u00bb,<\/em> f\u00e9minin av\u00e9r\u00e9 de <em>\u00ab\u00a0conducteur\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-88.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-88.png 512w, https:\/\/macite.tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-88-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dans le cas d\u2019une voiture ou d\u2019un camion, la question se pose : chauffeure ou chauffeuse ?
